An optical lens manufacturer in Acton has been assessed an $8,280 penalty for violating the state’s hazardous waste and groundwater regulations.
According to the state Department of Environmental Protection, inspectors at Acton Research Corp.’s facility last year found the company exceeded the time limit for storing hazardous waste and failed to comply with container labeling, weekly inspection and record rules.
The company was also discharging laboratory rinse waters into a septic system without a proper permit, according to the DEP.
The company will pay just over $2,000 of the penalty and conduct a project for the remaining cost to purchase a cabinet to help to dry the coats, boots and gloves for the Acton Fire Department.
In a statement, Mary Jude Pigsley, director of MassDEP’s Central Regional Office in Worcester, said the company has demonstrated good faith by correcting the violations and purchasing equipment for the fire department.
