QCC lands $143K workforce training grant for small businesses

Quinsigamond Community College in Worcester has been awarded a $143,000 grant from the Commonwealth Corp. to address the training needs of small businesses.
The grant will be used to offer free training to eligible businesses with 100 employees or fewer. Training programs will include critical workplace skills including listening, collaborating, presenting ideas and communication with other employees.
According to a press release from QCC, those topics were chosen after receiving feedback from area businesses.
Specifically, the grant will be used to create the program by QCC’s Center for Workforce Development and Continuing Education.
The program will begin with six workshops that include essential business skills, communicating with clarity and impact, problem solving and decision making, time management, presenting with impact and conflict resolution.
“These skills are not only highly valued in today’s marketplace, they are necessary if the business and the individual are to succeed,” said Kathleen Manning, dean of the school. “Strong soft skills ensure a productive, collaborative, healthy and effective work environment, key attributes for organizations in an increasingly competitive, global world.”
Eligible companies must also pay into the unemployment fund, which allocates money into the workforce training fund administered by the Commonwealth Corp., and hold a certificate of good standing from the state.
The program will be offered in four series in spring 2019, fall 2019, spring 2020 and fall 2020. Each workshop will enroll between 12 to 15 participants in Central Massachusetts.
