2011 40 Under Forty: James Sandagato

ASSISTANT VICE PRESIDENT COMMERCIAL LENDING AND SERVICES OFFICER, Southbridge Savings Bank

Company location: Southbridge

Residence: Spencer

Favorite movie: "Wedding Crashers"

Age: 33

Career highlights: I began working at Southbridge Savings Bank in July 1998. I held the positions of customer service representative, head teller, assistant branch manager and branch manager. Wanting to learn and experience more about banking, in 2004 I enrolled in an in-house commercial lending course and quickly realized this was my career path. In January 2007, I was promoted to full-time commercial loan officer and assistant vice president, commercial lending and services officer in 2009.

Community involvement: I am the outgoing president and a dedicated member of the Spencer Exchange Club. I am also a member of the Worcester Young Businessmen’s Association. In addition, I play an active role on the career vocational technical education advisory board at David Prouty High School, the Central Mass South Chamber of Commerce, Quaboag Valley Chamber of Commerce and Spencer Exchange Club Board of Directors.

Biggest success: Reaching the level of assistant vice president and commercial loan officer has been my greatest professional accomplishment. It was through various certificate programs along with a supportive group of co-workers and managers that made it all possible.

Biggest challenge: Making the transition from the retail side of the bank to the commercial side. While spending eight years in retail provided a great foundation, adapting to the subjectivity and creativity of the job was my biggest challenge.

Mentors: I’ve had several mentors: my family, a former co-worker and supervisor. My parents taught me the importance of being honest and respecting others. My brother has been an instrumental force in my development as a professional. His guidance and support is largely responsible for the many things I have achieved in my career. Lastly, I would not be where I am today without the assistance of Richard Cranshaw and Brian Chandley.

Hidden talent: Impersonation skills.
