Owner, Worcester Heat/Hit Quarters
Company location: Shrewsbury
Residence: Shrewsbury
Age: 29
Career highlights: While pitching as a sophomore at Assumption College in Worcester, I threw my arm out. After deciding to forgo arm surgery, I began down the path of coaching baseball instead of playing. I was a coach in the Worcester Heat Baseball organization for several years and an opportunity to acquire the program presented itself. I needed a home for the Worcester Heat program and Hit Quarters, a 30,000-square-foot indoor sports training facility, was born. Subsequently, I needed a field for my teams to practice outdoors and I acquired the rights to Hubbard Field in Grafton. Finally, after leasing the space for Hit Quarters for several years, I was able to purchase the building. The creation of Shrewsbury Sports Center was the final phase that will ensure continuity for my dreams to come true.
Community involvement: I support various local youth sport programs and schools. In addition, I provide financial assistance to many athletes who are less fortunate and may not otherwise participate in the programs both the Worcester Heat and Hit Quarters offer. Finally, I have for the past few years initiated local drives to collect “gently used” equipment for the Baseball in Africa program as well as for various local organizations in need.
Biggest success: For me, my biggest professional success has been the fact that I have been able to foster the fundamental skills of baseball and the importance of good sportsmanship to all the players I have coached and instructed.
Biggest challenge: My biggest challenge has been navigating the tough economic times. Parents love having their children active and involved. Now, more than ever, a parent’s decision to have their child participate in organized sports has become price sensitive and I am continuously trying to be creative in bringing new and affordable programs into all my businesses.
