Farm Manager/ Owner, Red Apple Farm
Company location: Phillipston
Residence: Phillipston
Age: 39
Career highlights: After college, I took a bookkeeping position for a mutual-fund company while I thought I would look for work in my field of study, geology. Meanwhile, I married the son of an apple farmer. Our goal was to eventually take over the family farm from his dad. When our first child was born, I decided to become a full-time mom. Six years later, with three sons, we made the move back to the farm. The last nine years have been a flurry of learning good business practices, managing our farm stand and personnel, expanding our business, having a daughter and raising four fantastic children!
Community involvement: I am mainly involved in the community through our children. I have been a Cub Scout den leader for nine years and also volunteer on our local Boy Scout Troop committee. I am a member of our elementary school’s parent-teacher group and have volunteered with Phillipston Youth Association programs. I am a member of the Phillipston Congregational Church Ladies Benevolent Society and the Phillipston Historical Society, of which I have served on the board of directors. I have served our town for the past seven years as a member of the planning board.
Biggest success: My biggest success is the satisfaction of knowing that we provide a special place for so many people to enjoy.
Biggest challenge: My biggest challenge, by far, due to the nature of our business and that we live on the farm, has been trying to balance family and business. I’m still working on that.
Mentors: My mother is the closest I have to a mentor. She has helped me through numerous personnel, tax and payroll issues. I can always bounce ideas off her and she has a strong moral compass. She is also my right hand during harvest season and does everything that I can’t get around to doing.
