2010 40 Under Forty: Albert S. Rose II

Farm Manager/ Owner, Red Apple Farm

Company location: Phillipston

Residence: Phillipston

Age: 39

Career highlights: I received a bachelor’s degree in international relations with minors in history and geography from Boston University and a master’s degree in agricultural economics from Cornell University. My master’s thesis was titled, “The Family Farm and Direct Marketing: Adapting to an Urbanizing Environment.” I worked four years for Frito-Lay as a senior field manager in strategic sourcing and material planning. My areas of responsibilities included the Midwest, the eastern half of the United States and Eastern Canada. My family and I moved back to our fourth-generation family farm in 2001.

Community involvement: Our farm is an integral part of our community and has been for many generations. Our employees are all local and they have become an extension of our family. I am an assistant leader in our Boy Scout Troop, a deacon at our Congregational Church and a coach for a local Little League team. I serve on several boards for our local chambers of commerce.

Biggest success: Our biggest measure of success is, along with my wife, keeping our family farm going for the next generation. This effort is made by carrying on my father’s efforts to make the farm more sustainable, diversified and connected.

Biggest challenge: The weather! Unfortunately we are completely dependent on the weather for production and sales (to grow and sell the crop). This risk has intensified as the farm has evolved from a primarily wholesale farm operation to what is now an exclusively on-farm direct-marketing operation.

Mentors: Paul Voglewede is a mentor to me. Paul was a member of senior management at Frito-Lay, based in Dallas, TX. He was a great role model and a person I admire. His motivations were true. He maintained perspective and never let small things become big things. He gave respect and earned respect. He would always look you in the eyes and smile.
