Program Coordinator, Community Engagement & Volunteering Center, Clark University
Company location: Worcester
Residence: Worcester
Age: 30
Career highlights: I was never the type to plan my life out, so I figured it out as I went along. I wanted to do something challenging and meaningful after I graduated from college, so I joined AmeriCorps and moved to Worcester. That experience taught me that I loved working with college students and building connections between the campus and local community. Since coming to Clark in 2005, I have been inspired by our students, faculty and community partners.
Community involvement: I am on the board of directors for the YWCA of Central Massachusetts and am very passionate about the work they do. I am a voting member for the New England region and represent New England in the National 30 under 30 Task Force that focuses on the involvement of women under 30 in the YWCA. I am also a trained facilitator for the StartSmart workshops conducted by the WAGE Project.
Biggest success: The biggest success thus far was teaching my first class. I co-taught with Mary-Ellen Boyle and learned so much from having an experienced faculty member in the classroom. Teaching is exhausting and sometimes frustrating, but knowing that a student learned something from the class makes it worthwhile.
Biggest challenge: The biggest challenge has been striking a balance between holding students accountable and allowing them to problem solve. The goal of teaching such life skills is to prepare them for success in their life after Clark.
Mentors: I have been fortunate to have strong, female mentors. It started with my grandmother, who was a devoted schoolteacher in southeastern Kentucky and taught me the value of a good education and helping others in need. And Linda Cavaioli at the YWCA inspires me with her boundless energy and determination.
