Marketing Manager, Mirick O’Connell
Company location: Worcester
Residence: Dudley
Age: 39
Career highlights: I worked at a law firm part-time during college. I liked the face-paced environment, so I spent the next few years working as a legal administrative assistant. When a position opened in the marketing department, I saw that as my opportunity to take advantage of my creative side as well as my educational background. Eventually, I became head of the department. I’ve been the marketing manager for almost two years now and with Mirick O’Connell for more than 12 years. I’m challenged every day, and looking forward to what the future holds!
Community involvement: My community work has included volunteering with the United Way Day of Caring, United Way Loaned Executive, Central Massachusetts Heart Walk and Go Red for Women. I spearheaded the firm’s coat drive to benefit the Worcester Community Action Council and the firm’s food drive to benefit Worcester County Food Bank. In my personal life, I have participated in the Worcester Relay for Life and I am a member of the UMass Pancreatic Cancer Alliance.
Biggest challenge: Switching my career from that of a legal assistant to a marketing professional was a leap of faith. The challenge was that I had to prove myself to be a true marketing professional, not only to others but to myself.
Mentors: I have had several mentors — both personally and professionally — throughout my life. Right now I have two mentors: Diane Power, the firm’s executive director, and Bob Kilroy, a partner at the firm who is also chair of the marketing committee. I have a tremendous amount of respect for both of them, as they each have their own way of empowering me to strive to do my best.
Hidden talents: I’m not sure my talents are “hidden,” but something people may not know about me is that I enjoy decorating cakes.
