2010 40 Under Forty: Kristin Morales

Executive Director & COO, Harrington Physician Services

Company location: Southbridge

Residence: Granville

Age: 35

Career highlights: As a junior in college, I accepted a part-time, clerical position with a local physician. Upon graduation, the medical field provided me with the broadest career opportunities. Starting at Hartford Hospital, I have worked in a variety of medical office settings and in a variety of roles. Most recently, I served as a regional manager of practice operations at ProHealth Physicians in Connecticut. Other positions have included business manager at ECHN Health Services, also in Connecticut, and manager of business operations at Valley Medical Group in Amherst.

Community involvement: I have two children and have been very involved in their schools. Additionally, I have worked to fundraise for various animal rights organizations.

Biggest success: Growing Harrington Physician Services from eight providers to more than 40 in less than three years has been a very rewarding achievement. Many of our patients are elderly or disadvantaged and traveling poses a significant obstacle to accessing care. Having services available close to home can contribute to better patient outcomes by removing barriers to care.

Biggest challenge: My biggest challenge professionally is to find ways to provide meaningful, high-quality patient care services in a dynamic health-care environment. With reimbursement rates down and costs increasing, the physician practice has very narrow margins and often times we wrestle with how to provide the best possible care within the fiscal and regulatory confines of the industry.

Mentors: Most recently, Ed Moore, Tom Sullivan and Dr. Art Russo of Harrington Hospital have consistently provided me with the guidance and insight necessary to strategically grow Harrington Physician Services. Their unique experiences and their willingness to spend time working with me have proven to be a recipe for success. In particular, Ed challenges me to find way to accomplish the impossible; Tom teaches me when the best thing to say is nothing; and Art is my most treasured physician consultant.

Hidden talent: I love to cook. My father was a chef and my favorite way to relax is to cook a gourmet meal for my family. n
