$1.76M For Central Mass Green Communities

The state has awarded $8.1 million to 35 cities and towns designated as green communities through the Department of Energy Resources, including $1.76 million in Central Massachusetts.

Funding for the program comes from auctions of carbon emissions permits under the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative. The award amounts were based on the communities' populations and per capita incomes.

The awards to local communities are:

  • $150,794 to Acton for energy conservation measures at the public library and town hall, tankless hot water heaters and energy education.
  • $171,523 to Athol for energy efficiency improvements at the senior center, town hall and library, and a solar hot water system at the fire station.
  • $137,502 to Hopkinton for energy efficiency measures at municipal buildings.
  • $141,114 to Lancaster for energy efficiency measures and a solar project.
  • $173,526 to Natick for a solar power purchase agreement at the middle school, the incremental cost of hybrid vehicles and carbon dioxide sensors at town hall.
  • $136,238 for energy efficiency measures and the incremental cost of a fuel-efficient vehicle.
  • $852,083 to Worcester for financial incentives for energy efficient home building and renovation and for energy education.

All the green communities also get solar waste compactors for use at parks and beaches.

The DOER will accept more applications for green community designations and grants later this year.
