Amidst a business environment consumed by cut-backs and downsizing, the company Christmas party will be one of the first casualties of this Scrooge-like economy. But that doesn’t mean it has to be nixed altogether.
The following pieces of advice will help companies host a holiday party without breaking the bank or appearing irresponsible.
Stay Cheerful. While canceling the company holiday party may appear financially responsible, you don’t want employee morale to suffer as a result. So celebrate economically.
“Hosting an inexpensive office holiday party shows employees that the company values their workers but also isn’t overspending on frivolous things during a down economy,” says Bridget Coila of Suite101.com.
Be exclusive. A good way to cut costs is to simply have less people on hand to feed and entertain.
“Some companies make their office holiday party into an employee-only affair,” says Coila. “This works best if the party is held during work hours, since many won’t attend an evening or weekend event without spouses.”
Location, Location, Location. Rather than renting an expensive banquet hall, a restaurant is always a better choice for those companies on a budget.
Patricia Schaefer of BusinessKnowhow.com suggests another relatively inexpensive option: have your party catered at the office.
“Try to locate office parties away from workstations; you want to do what you can to create a ‘non-businesslike’ atmosphere,” she says.
Remember the sentiment. The old adage, “it’s the thought that counts,” can also apply to holiday parties, and in tough economic times, it’s more imperative than ever before.
“The most important thing to remember is that employees value appreciation more than how much money their company spends on the company party,” says Coila. “So bosses should be sure to spend time thanking their employees for all of their hard work throughout the year.”
