10 Things I Know About ... Retaining Employees

10. They’re not afraid to jump ship.
Despite an unemployment rate that remains high, the job market has improved significantly over the past few years and your employees know it. Most professionals are more confident in their prospects and more likely to jump ship if they’re not happy.

9. Replacing a top performer isn’t easy.
Highly skilled workers aren’t a dime a dozen. Certain positions are in top demand. Competition for these types of professionals is stiff and many are receiving multiple offers.

8. Pay them what they’re worth.
Providing competitive compensation is a must. Your teams’ salaries and benefits should be regularly evaluated to ensure they’re at or just above market rates.

7. Build relationships.
Unhappiness with managers is a top reason many leave their jobs. Schedule  periodic one-on-ones or organize team-building events.

6. Keep them in the know.
Give your staff updates on company performance and goals, and explain what it means for them and their jobs. Sharing this will help them feel connected.

5. ‘Thank you’ goes a long way.
People are more likely to stay if they feel valued. Two of the most effective acknowledgements of outstanding performance — a sincere thank-you and praise in a public setting — cost nothing but go a long way.

4. Promote from within.
Your staff will grow discouraged and be more likely to leave if they feel they can’t advance. Review their career paths with them and discuss how they can move up.

3. Seek their input.
Actively seek their feedback. Maintain an open-door policy, and an open mind, so that you’re easily approachable.

2. Corporate culture sells.
Do you have organized staff activities? They improve morale and  boost retention.

1. Invest in your staff.
Professional development opportunities are becoming increasingly important. Develop strong training programs that help people expand their skills.
