10. Vision
Every leader has vision. See yourself and/or your organization as already having achieved a predetermined, worthwhile, personal or organizational goal. How does achieving this goal set the stage for your success now and in the future?
9. Be Specific
“I will make more money this year” is too general. Although this is your overall aim, you will need to develop detailed, written action plans to make it happen.
8. Communication
Who needs to be involved? Effectively communicating your ideas to stakeholders helps to align them with your goals and objectives and keeps you accountable.
7. Time Frame
Is this a short-term or long-term goal? Break the goal down into manageable parts. Determine deadlines and adjust accordingly. If you can’t measure it, you can’t manage it!
6. Overcoming Obstacles
Identify potential obstacles and brainstorm solutions.
5. Take Action
Nothing happens until you do something
4. Be Realistic
There are many aspects of this process that will be within your control while other aspects are outside of your control. This doesn’t mean you shouldn’t have stretch goals. In the words of Michelangelo: “The greater danger for most of us is not that our aim is too high and we miss it, but that it is too low and we reach it.”
3. Track Your Progress
Putting a system of rewards and recognition in place helps to maintain focus and increase motivation.
2. Practice
Developing habits for success takes time and commitment. There is an ancient piece of wisdom that says “If you do what you have always done, you will get what you have always gotten.” Becoming a practitioner of goal setting fosters growth and change.
1. It Works!
Having clearly defined, written goals that are realistic, measureable, and manageable is the best way to ensure your success.
