The City of Worcester will now receive legal counsel from its first female city solicitor as Alexandra Kalkounis has been named to the cabinet position.

Kalkounis joined the City government in 2011 and most recently served as deputy city solicitor, a role she’s held since August 2021, according to a Friday press release from the Office of City Manager Eric Batista.

Kalkounis succeeds long-term City Solicitor Michael Traynor, who retired from the position following a 37-year tenure with the municipality on Friday.

“Kalkounis is a seasoned attorney with a proven track record of contract negotiations, policy updates, litigation, and management,” Batista said in the release. “She has been an asset to the Law Department since her start in 2011. I look forward to now seeing her lead the department with honor and integrity as we continue to grow as a city and bolster our municipal operations.”

During her 13-year career with the City, Kalkounis has led initiatives across a wide range of municipality sectors. Serving as chief legal counsel, she drove the implementation of the City’s recreational marijuana program by drafting marijuana host agreements, local laws, policies, and procedures.

Kalkounis has been key in contract negotiation and management for city projects including contracts for the Worcester Public Schools and developed loan and grant documents for American Rescue Plan Act fund recipients.

She has spearheaded eminent domain projects relating to road improvements and reconstruction for areas including Belmont Street, Grafton Street, and Kelley Square.

Kalkounis earned her law degree from Suffolk Law School in Boston and bachelor’s degree in political science from Boston University.

“I am honored to take this role and grateful for the opportunities I have received throughout the years that have allowed me to grow professionally and reach this point in my career,” Kalkounis said in the release. “I am excited to be a part of the city manager’s vision for Worcester during this transformative period and ready to start implementing policies that will positively impact the community for years to come. I am thrilled to be leading the law department in this next chapter.”
