10 Things I Know About... Business On The Golf Course

10. Character Counts

If you really want to see the character of a potential business partner, the golf course is a great place to start. There are always several ways to “cheat” during golf. If you cheat in golf, your partner might assume you cheat at work.

9. Stay Focused

When golfing with a client, give him or her your full attention. Unless there is a pending emergency, keep the cell phone off.

8. Remain Calm

Golf is a maddening game. From short downhill putts to bad breaks off the tee, golf can push your emotional buttons. Remember golf etiquette: Don’t throw your clubs, swear or act inappropriately. This would be a sign of disrespect to your business partner.

7. Be Positive

Studies show that people like to do business with companies that promote their strong points, not dwell on the weaknesses of competing companies. Refrain from talking poorly about your competition.

6. Drink Cautiously

Your liquor consumption is being monitored and your behavior after that liquor can kill a deal or a relationship altogether.

5. Dress For Success

Even though golf is a social activity, do not believe that you can dress down for the situation. Make sure you check the website to get a feel for that golf club's proper attire. Bring a second shirt in case you are staying for dinner.

4. Take It Easy

It is important for you to play well, but remember, you're playing golf to build a better business relationship. Don't act as if you are competing for a major championship.

3. Friends V. Colleagues

If the reason for golfing is business, be careful transitioning it to social by including spouses. Make sure your spouse is aware that there is serious business on the line.

2. Don’t Forget…

Even though golf is fun, you are still there to discuss business. Even though you are in a social setting, it is OK to bring up your business needs.

1. Rinse And Repeat

If you followed all of the previous nine tips and had business success, then do it all over again.
