WPI math tutor system gets $2M

Researchers at Worcester Polytechnic Institute and Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh received a four-year $2 million award to develop a computerized math tutor for middle school students.

The U.S. Department of Education gave the grant.

The system, which is known as ASSISTment tutors students and provides long term assessment of student performance. The system also offers feedback to teachers and parents.

According to WPI, the system gives school systems long-term data on student performance that must be reported under the federal No Child Left Behind Act.

Teachers and parents also get day-to-day feedback on what students have learned and not learned, according to WPI.

The grant will allow the university researchers to add new capabilities to the system, which has been developed over the last four years with assistance from the DOE, the Office of Naval Research and the National Science Foundation.
