Worcester is the best city in New England to start a business, but not necessarily one of the best among the largest cities in the United States, according to a national survey released Monday.
The survey, by WalletHub, a personal finance social network, ranked Worcester 96th out of the 150 largest U.S. cities. Trailing Worcester were Boston, which ranked 105th, and Providence, R.I., at No. 135.
Each of the 150 cities was graded on two factors: access to resources and business environment. Worcester ranked 67th on the former, but near the bottom – 140th – on the latter.
The rankings on access to resources include accessibility to financing, affordability of office space, employee availability and labor costs. Business environment is measured by such factors as corporate taxes, cost of living, workforce education level, entrepreneurial activity and industry variety. Boston and Providence ranked below Worcester on business environment.
The top 50 are dominated by southern and western cities. The highest ranking from within the Northeast is Buffalo, at No. 65, followed by Worcester.
Who’s number one in the survey? Shreveport, La., followed in order by Tulsa, Okla., Springfield, Mo., Chattanooga, Tenn., and Jackson, Miss.
