Worcester Together, the United Way of Central Massachusetts, and the Worcester Regional Chamber of Commerce announced on Wednesday the launch of a new initiative designed to support Afghan evacuees arriving in Central Massachusetts.
Known as Operation Welcome, the initiative will primarily focus on connecting evacuees and their families with housing.
“As Americans, we have an obligation to these Afghans who assisted our troops while they were serving in a hostile environment,” said WRCC President and CEO Timothy Murray, in a statement.
WRCC, in particular, plans to work with its real estate industry members to create an inventory of apartments and homes available for the arriving evacuees. Tony Economou, former Worcester City Councilor and real estate agent, will help lead that effort.
Operation Together will help connect evacuees with jobs, according to the announcement, noting many of the new arrivals bring with them skills needed in the community.
Both Worcester nonprofits Refugee & Immigrant Assistance Center and Ascentria Care Alliance are receiving Afghan evacuees as they arrive, per the announcement.
