The Whitcomb Mansion, an 1879 building that most recently served as the New England headquarters of insurance firm Quaker Special Risk, has been sold to a Worcester property manager for $1.1 million.

According to Worcester County land records, Dmitry Zhivotovsky of New Hampshire, a Worcester landlord, closed on the sale of the 9,000-square-foot mansion Friday afternoon.

Zhivotovsky is the owner of at least three other Worcester properties, including the Worcester Market and two apartment buildings on Austin Street.

According to a real estate posting, the property was built as the home of George H. Whitcomb, one of the city’s leading businessmen and philanthropists who founded Bay State Envelope Co., which once produced a third of the country's envelopes.

The property was renovated in 2002 as the offices for Quaker Special Risk, which left the building in August for a new space in the Mercantile Center on Front Street in Worcester.

When reached via phone, Zhivotovsky said the space would be best utilized as office space or possibly even as housing for Worcester college students, but a final decision hasn’t been made.

“Anybody who would like to be in such a beautiful space,” he said.

The sale came in below the asking price of $1.25 million but above the city's assessed value of $953,200.
