Worcester expands Union Station project to include waterproofing

The Worcester Redevelopment Authority approved at its latest meeting to increase the contract price for further accessibility and side platform work at Worcester’s Union Station by an additional $3.8 million.

The addition brings the total cost of the contract to a grand total of around $7.1 million, according to the agenda from the WRA meeting on Thursday. The WRA cited the need for further waterproofing work as a reason for more than doubling the original contract price.

The accessibility and side platform work are part of a larger $45-million contract with the MBTA which aims to improve the ability of Union Station to simultaneously field additional trains, instead of having to serve only one train at a time. Much of the money is funded by a federal grant the city received in October 2020 to make improvements to the station.

Beginning in March, the MBTA began to move passengers to board on an alternate platform located east of the station, located directly above the station’s Shrewsbury Street parking lot. The parking lot remains open during construction, although some spots are no longer available due to the ongoing construction.

The move to board the alternative platform marks the beginning of the second of three phases of the construction process. The second phase is expected to take approximately one year to complete, after which passengers will be moved to the west half of the new platform.

The work is projected to be completed by the winter of 2023. Other improvements during the project include a new pedestrian bridge and a new center platform in between tracks.
