Worcester dentist indicted for alleged $2M MassHealth fraud scheme

Worcester-based Pleasant Street Dental and its owner were indicted in June for their involvement in an alleged MassHealth scheme to defraud the state Medicaid insurance program for more than $2 million.

Hopkinton resident Meenakshy Yegneswaran, Pleasant Street Dental’s owner, and the dental practice have been indicted by a Worcester grand jury on one charge each of Medicaid false claims, larceny over $1,200, and Medicaid excess charges, according to a press release from the Office of Massachusetts Attorney General Andrea Joy Campbell on Monday.

The indictments allege Yegneswaran and Pleasant Street Dental billed MassHealth for unprovided services, including during times when Yegneswaran, the sole dentist at the office, was out of the country; and they illegally charged MassHealth-covered patients cash for prescription mouthwash covered by the Medicaid program.

The Attorney General’s Office alleges Yegneswaran and Pleasant Street fraudulently obtained $2.06 million from MassHealth in the scheme.

Pleasant Street Dental did not immediately respond to WBJ’s request for comment on Tuesday.
