The Worcester city administration is proposing a new oversight board for the Polar Park baseball stadium, whose members would be appointed by the city manager.
The proposed-five member Worcester Ballpark Authority would oversee leases, development or parking agreements signed by the city or its public development agency, the Worcester Redevelopment Authority. It would issue permits or other approvals for ballpark use and monitor the financial status of the ballpark and a related parking garage across Madison Street.
City Manager Edward Augustus and City Solicitor Michael Traynor, the head of the city's law department, proposed the new board in a memo to the City Council late Friday.
Polar Park, which is being built for the soon-to-be Worcester Red Sox, will be owned by the city and leased to the top Boston Red Sox affiliate. The $132-million ballpark is slated to open next April.
Each member of the board would be appointed by Augustus for five-year terms. The council doesn't need to approve the board's creation, Traynor said in a memo. If the council takes no action within 90 days, it will be automatically established.
