Total compensation for private workers in the Boston area, including Worcester, was up 2.7 percent in the 12 months ending in June, narrowly beating the national average.
New data released last week by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics show the Boston region to be one of nine urban areas among 15 that were measured with both total compensation growth and wage and salary growth exceed the national average during that period.
Wages and salaries, which comprise the largest piece of total compensation costs, rose by 2.9 percent, compared to a 2.4-percent national average, during that 12-month period.
Nationally, compensation growth lagged in Detroit, Houston and Washington, D.C. which each had growth rates at 2.1 percent or less. That growth was highest in the Miami, New York and San Jose areas, which all had growth of more than 3 percent.
