Worcester-based virtual craft market launches

A new shop local site LocalPorch has launched in Worcester with the aim of connecting consumers with makers.

The online company launched out of the Worcester CleanTech Incubator on Thursday. The company is initially launching in the Worcester area and it plans to expand into communities across New England, with its sights set on eventually reaching the rest of the country.

“It is always exciting when a company in our program publicly launches. This is a big win for the Worcester area on many levels,” Sarah Mahan who is an associate director of entrepreneurship at WPI and coordinates the program which Local Porch is a participant in.

LocalPorch.com is a virtual craft market, enabling consumers to discover and purchase from local makers and artisans. The assortment is similar to what is usually only available from a craft fair or retail location that specializes in local wares, according to the company. The difference between this site and other online shopping sites such as Etsy is the opportunity to engage with the maker and meet with them in person when picking up the product -- although shipping is also available.

“Sites like Etsy and Amazon Handmade provide access to a nearly unlimited and often overwhelming number of anonymous items from around the world. LocalPorch provides a 1:1 connection,” LocalPorch CEO Kim Sullivan, who founded the company with Suzi Capone, said in a statement.

A beta version of the website is currently live.
