Two days after Worcester City Council discussed the future of gasoline stations, the City received roughly $640,000 to construct new electric vehicle charging stations.
MassDEP awarded a total of $13 million to municipalities across the state to build EV charging stations, according to a Thursday announcement from the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection.
Worcester’s allotment will be dispersed across six different companies operating gas stations in the city, paying for 14 new charging stations.
The companies include Applegreen New England Inc., Blink Network LLC, Cumberland Farms Inc., Equilon Enterprises LLC, Global Partners LP, and EV Build LLC. Each firm is receiving $100,000 to build two stations, except EV Build, who was granted $140,160 for four stations.
The grants were announced two days after City Councilors debated banning new construction of gas stations in the city to mitigate fossil fuel usage. The council ultimately voted 6-5 against the ban.
