The Worcester Red Sox on Monday night are planning to unveil the club's nickname and logo in a public ceremony with fans.
"The nickname won't come as a shock," said Dr. Charles Steinberg, president of the Worcester Red Sox. "But we're excited to make the announcement in Worcester on Monday."
Team Chairman and Co-owner Larry Lucchino and the team’s ballpark designer Janet Marie Smith, who oversaw the $285-million Fenway Park renovation in Boston in 2012 -- including the installation of seats atop the Green Monster -- will present a sneak preview of the latest Polar Park stadium design images.
The so-called Festive Reveal will take place at 7 p.m. Monday in the lobby of the Mercantile Center at 100 Front St. in Worcester.
When the team announced in November 2018 it was considering new names, officials said they might drop the Red Sox name in favor of something else. The team's agreement with the city only says the word "Worcester" must appear somewhere in the team's name.
The Triple A affiliate of the Boston Red Sox has also been known as the Red Sox for the entirety of its 48-year existence, all of which has been based in Rhode Island.
In its annual valuation of Major League Baseball teams' worth, Forbes put the Boston Red Sox value at $3.2 billion, making it the third most valuable baseball brand.
NESN host Tom Caron is expected to be on hand for a live broadcast at Monday's Worcester Red Sox event.
The state committed $35 million to infrastructure improvements to redevelop the area, including a new throughway for the ballpark, market rate housing, and construction of a municipal parking garage. In addition, the city borrowed $101 million to build the stadium project to lure the Pawtucket Red Sox to move to the city.
Opening day for the team in Worcester is expected for April 2021.
