The Worcester Red Sox attracted 7,900 fans to the minor league baseball team’s first home game of the season on Tuesday.
“It was one of the largest crowds for any team in the entire league thus far this season,” said Bill Wanless, senior vice president of communications for the WooSox, in a statement. “We look forward to hosting our loyal fans for 74 more home games at Polar Park.”
Wanless said he is unsure how the home opener attendance will compare with attendance for the rest of the season. Polar Park’s full capacity holds 9,508 fans.
The number of fans on Tuesday was significantly higher than last year’s average attendance, which was 6,145.
Attendance in 2021 was curtailed by COVID-19 restrictions and some ongoing construction on the $160-million Polar Park stadium. The first 12 home games of the 2021 season were restricted to a 2,377-person capacity, after which ongoing construction limited capacity at various stages.
Despite the limits for the 2021 season, the WooSox ranked sixth of 120 minor league baseball teams for highest attendance. The team had two sellout crowds of 9,508.
On Tuesday, the WooSox beat the Lehigh Valley IronPigs 8-3, bringing their season record to 6-1.
