Wines & More, a Providence-based alcohol retailer, plans to renovate the former Borders Bookstore on Route 9 in Shrewsbury and turn it into a wine store.
Richard Ricker, an attorney who represented Wines & More before the Shrewsbury Board of Selectmen, said that the board approved an alcohol license transfer for the store this week and that the company hopes to open the store later this year, in time for the holiday season.
Wines & More is planning "extensive renovations," Ricker said.
"They need to basically gut out a lot of the interior space in order to ready it for their type of showcasing," he said.
The company, which will lease the building, is spending $600,000 on the renovations and acquisition of the license. The price of the license was not made public.
The store will also contain a classroom for the company's "Wines and More Academy," which provides workshops about wine for customers.
The store will provide full-time jobs for between 15 and 25 people, Ricker said.
