Lowell Publishing Co., which owns a number of newspapers in North Central Massachusetts and beyond, has agreed to purchase the Gardner News, the newspaper reported this morning.
Lowell Publishing, a subsidiary of Denver-based MediaNews Group Inc., currently owns The Sentinel and Enterprise, The Sun of Greater Lowell and several smaller publications.
The Gardner News reported that publisher Alberta Saffel Bell made the announcement Wednesday about the sale with Mark O'Neil, president and publisher of Lowell Publishing. O'Neil confirmed the report this morning.
The sale is slated to close in the third quarter of this year. The purchase price was not disclosed. The Hubbard and Bell families have owned the paper since 1921.
The Gardner News serves the communities of Gardner, Westminster, Winchendon, Templeton, Hubbardston, Athol and Rindge, N.H.
