Who You Know

When it comes to successful job searches, networking is a far more important method than scouring the Internet or going through a staffing agency. That's according to a study of successful job seekers in the Northeast by Right Management.

Right, a division of Manpower Inc., analyzed data on more than 4,500 of its career transition clients in 2008 and 2009. It found that 46 percent of the job candidates in 2009 found their jobs by networking. Just 18 percent got their employment leads from the Internet, and 11 percent from an agency or search firm.

The portion of candidates who found their jobs through agencies declined from 15 percent to 11 percent between 2008 and 2009, while networking and the Internet became slightly more significant, rising from 45 percent to 46 percent and 16 percent to 18 percent, respectively.
