Sixty percent of IT instructors surveyed for the Cengage Learning study considered working knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet and presentation to be the definition of computer proficiency. The Stamford-based customized learning provider polled 797 faculty members to gauge proficiency levels in social media technology versus professional workplace computer applications. Eighty-five percent of instructors surveyed considered student proficiency with e-mail, web surfing and file downloading to be at a working or advanced level. Skills the students lacked the most included database, spreadsheets, web creation and web conferencing.
