What Have We Learned?

Optimists like to reclassify hard times as "learning experiences." So what have CFOs learned from the Great Recession? According to a new survey by Robert Half Management Resources, one of the big lessons is the importance of employee morale.

Asked the greatest lesson they have learned from the recession, 27 percent of CFOs chose "place greater focus on maintaining employee morale." The next most popular choices were "take decisive measures more quickly to avoid multiple rounds of cost cutting" (22 percent), "make sure you have enough staff to maintain productivity" (22 percent) and "implement more detailed succession plans for the company" (15 percent).

Eleven percent said they haven't learned any lessons from the recession.

The telephone survey, conducted by an independent research firm, included 1,400 CFOs from U.S. companies with 20 or more employees.
