West Boylston was awarded $49,000 to improve pedestrian safety at four locations near a school and recreational facilities as part of a $1.7-million state grant package aimed at helping towns and cities improve facilities for bicyclists, pedestrians and connections to schools and senior centers.

“We expect these grant awards to lead to additional infrastructure installations in cities and towns which help people to physically-distance and help people feel more comfortable about walking, bicycling and taking public transportation,” Massachusetts Gov. Charlie Baker said in a Thursday statement announcing the funding round.

The initiative, dubbed The Shared Winter Streets and Spaces Grant Program, was established on Nov. 10, and provides grants ranging from $5,000 to $500,000. West Boylston was among 11 municipalities to receive funds during this round.
