Washington Square hotel project downsized, set for groundbreaking in spring

Photo/Zachary Comeau The developer who built the Homewood Suites on Washington Square is looking to develop vacant land across the street, in front of Union Station.

A proposed 96-room hotel in Washington Square in Worcester is expected to break ground next spring as the developer works through the permitting process this fall.

The hotel will be built by First Bristol Corp., the same firm that built the Homewood Suites just across the street from the proposed site where Summer Street meets Front Street at the rotary.

The report, submitted to the City Council last month, said the project is estimated to cost $21.8 million. That figure along with the room number is a downsize from when First Bristol and the city announced the project in April, which called for a $22 million project and 110 rooms.

The Worcester Redevelopment Authority, which owns the three vacant parcels of about an acre,  has agreed to sell the property to First Bristol for $400,000.

The full plans are still being developed, but the city and developer said parking will be built under part of the building.

The parcels, 0, 20 and 36 Washington St., are contiguous pieces of land between Union Station and a medical office building and include a discontinued road that once connected to Front Street.

The 120-room extended stay Homewood Suites Hotel by Hilton across the street opened in 2017.

CORRECTION: Due to a factual error on the information provided to the Worcester City Council, a previous version of this story incorrectly said the new project cost of the Washington Square hotel is $13 million. The correct amount if $21.8 million.
