Utility Merger Delayed

Northeast Utilities said in a regulatory filing that its merger with NStar will be delayed until early 2012 as the companies continue to seek state approval in Massachusetts.

Northeast Utilities, which is based in Connecticut, said the companies have received all regulatory approvals for the merger except those from the Massachusetts Department of Public Utilities and the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. It said it expects approval from the NRC by the end of 2011.

The DOER has requested a stay of the merger proceedings, and the parties are in discussions about the motion.

NStar is based in Boston and is the utility company for much of the MetroWest region.

The companies had originally said they expected to close the deal this year.
