U.S. Unemployment Rises

The nation's unemployment rate inched up a tenth-of-one-percent to 9.2 percent in June, according to the U.S. Department of Labor.

Companies created only 18,000 jobs in June after averaging 215,000 jobs per month from February through April. Hiring has been essentially flat for the past two months, with the DOL revising the May job creation figure down from 52,000 to 25,000.

The leisure and hospitality industry continued to surge in June, adding 34,000 jobs. That industry has added a total of 279,000 since the beginning of last year.

The news was worse for government workers, who lost 39,000 jobs in June.

Most other employment sectors remained flat.
