Unitil Touts $800K In Rebates

New Hampshire-based Unitil Corp., which provides electricity and natural gas to a handful of communities in northern Worcester County, said it has issued rebates for 25 municipal energy efficiency projects over the past 20 months.

The projects range from lighting to heating upgrades and will save an estimated $15 million over the 13-year lifespan of the new equipment, the utility said.

The projects cost about $1.6 million and Unitil provided $882,291 in rebates, which help reduce the payback period on energy investments.

The rebates were provided under the state's 2008 Green Communities Act, which allows for utilities to fund efficiency programs through ratepayer surcharges. Rebates are also available for homeowners and business owners, Unitil noted.

In October, the nonprofit American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy (ACEEE) ranked Massachusetts as the top state for energy efficiency for the second year in a row.

ACEEE noted the Green Communities Act in its scorecard for the Bay State, as well as the 1997 utility industry restructuring. The group noted that Massachusetts has "one of the most ambitious fully-funded state savings targets," with a 2012 goal of 2.4-percent electricity savings, which will increase to 2.5 percent per year from 2013 to 2015.
