Unemployment's Catch 22

Job searches are full of paradoxes: you need experience to get experience, it's easier to find a job if you already have a job. According to executive outplacement firm Challenger Gray & Christmas you can add another to that list: the longer you've been unemployed the longer it may take to become employed again.

The firm noted that despite recent increases in the national employment numbers, the ranks of the long-term unemployed continue to grow. In April, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that 6.7 million Americans, about 45 percent of the unemployed, have been out of work for 27 weeks or more.

As people remain out of work, the firm said, potential employers may decide their skills are no longer fresh enough. At the same time, the job seekers may have a hard time keeping up a positive attitude, which can be an important part of a job search.
