Unemployment Up To 9.4 Percent

U.S. unemployment hit 9.4 percent in May, up 8.9 percent from the previous month, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Nonfarm payroll employment also dropped by 345,000 for the month, with the manufacturing industry seeing particularly serious losses.

The ranks of the unemployed rose by 787,000 to 14.5 million in May. That brings the increase in unemployed people since the recession began in December 2007 to 7 million.

The number of manufacturing jobs fell by 156,000, to 12 million, and the construction, retail and professional and business services sectors also lost ground. Education and health services and leisure and hospitality were the only sectors to see an increase in employment.
