UMass Memorial to cut $24M in energy costs

UMass Memorial Health Care in Worcester is expected to save a total of $24 million in energy and operational costs through an energy performance contract with Siemens, as well as other efforts.
Siemens and UMass Memorial announced last week work has begun on phase two of a 10-year energy performance contract, which was designed to go along with the healthcare system’s plan to reduce its energy consumption and purchasing costs, while maximizing the use of renewable energy.
The first phase included upgrading lighting in hallways, corridors, stairwells, and in administrative, physician and patient spaces. The project will also include solar net metering, which will allow the healthcare system to use solar energy generated elsewhere.
The solar net metering program will eventually include 12 contracts, portable between buildings over the next two decades. The healthcare system will also build a cogeneration plant, allowing it to repurpose heat created within the medical center and use it to generate electricity.
