Two YMCAs to merge in Central Mass.

YMCA of Central Massachusetts and Tri-Community YMCA of Southbridge are merging, the two agencies have announced.
Tri-Community YMCA will become the sixth branch in the YMCA of Central Massachusetts, joining the Central Community and Greendale family branches in Worcester, the Leominster and Montachusett community branches in northern Worcester County, and the Boroughs Family Branch in Westborough.
The Tri-Community and Central Massachusetts boards of directors have approved the merger, with the exact date for completion yet to be determined, the two agencies said May 14.
No programming or staffing will be cut, they said. Staff will be able to move between the Central Massachusetts branches and the Southbridge facility, making some staff coverage easier, said Sharon Henderson, the director of marketing and public relations for the YMCA of Central Massachusetts.
"It's a better opportunity for the community to have more programming," Henderson said. "It's a way to continue to get as much reach as we can."
Glenn Juchno, the executive director of the Tri-Community YMCA, said in a statement that the merger will allow for expanded programming and services.
Today, the YMCA of Central Massachusetts' branches have about 35,000 members. The Southbridge location has about 4,600 members, along with 220 employees, all but 30 of which are part-time.
The Montachusett Community Branch in Fitchburg joined the YMCA of Central Massachusetts five years ago. The YMCA of Central Massachusetts covers 57 communities, a list that will grow to 70 with the merger with the Tri-Community location.
The YMCA of Central Massachusetts and the Tri-Community YMCA said they studied the potential merger for more than a year before signing a merger agreement in February.
