The Tufts University Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine in Grafton has been selected to participate in a $185 million, five-year grant to prevent the spread of animal-born diseases to humans.
The grant is from the U.S. Agency for International Aid, or USAID, and is aimed at bringing together doctors, veterinarians and public health officials to study the sources of animal-born diseases and how to prevent their outbreak in humans.
Tufts's will work with with Bethesda-based DAI, an international development organization, and with the University of Minnesota.
The program, known as RESPOND, will focus on field epidemiology studies and trainings that will allow physicians and veterinarians to better detect diseases and manage outbreak response.
The Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University in North Grafton treats more than 30,000 cases each year and studies animal, public and environmental health.
