Thursday brings 18 new coronavirus cases, 1 new death in Worcester County

Worcester County reported 18 new coronavirus cases and one new death Thursday, according to the Massachusetts Department of Public Health.

The new cases contribute to the 12,050 total in the county. Statewide, there were 271 new confirmed and probable cases. Of those, there were 199 confirmed and 72 probable cases Thursday.

Fatalities increased to 889 in Worcester County with the new recorded deaths. Thursday was the second time in the past week the county had only one reported death. Before then, it hadn't taken place since April 9.

Throughout Massachusetts, there were 36 new probable and confirmed deaths Thursday. More specifically, there were 23 confirmed and 13 probable coronavirus-related fatalities. Since the pandemic began, Massachusetts has had 7,770 COVID-19 deaths.

DPH reported 10,287 newly administered coronavirus tests were conducted Thursday.

The City of Worcester on Thursday reported 47 new coronavirus cases in the past week bringing the total to 5,115. Coronavirus updates by the city are now made once a week, every Thursday.

UMass Memorial Health Care and Saint Vincent Hospital in Worcester reported 49 total cases and 18 in the ICU. In total the hospitals have had 324 total coronavirus deaths since the beginning of the pandemic, and 360 employees have tested positive.

MetroWest Medical Center in Natick and Framingham reported 26 suspected and confirmed cases, and Milford Regional Medical Center reported 19, according to DPH. In total the hospitals have had 14 suspected and confirmed cases in the ICU. Heywood Hospital in Gardner and HealthAlliance in Leominster report 15 suspected and confirmed cases and six in intensive care.

Nationally, there have been more than 2.1 million cases, and 118,421 total coronavirus-related deaths, according to Johns Hopkins University in Maryland. Globally, there have been over 8.4 million cases and 453,290 fatalities.
