Tech Update Time

Human resources professionals spend most of their time focused on humans: employees' needs, ways of appealing to potential recruits, guarding against interpersonal problems. But according to HR research group Staffing.org, the field also has to embrace the nonhuman, in the form of complicated computer systems.

Staffing.org says staffing pros use IT systems for everything from advertising to succession planning, and they need to know something about how the technology works. That doesn't mean getting deep into networking or coding, but it does mean having an idea of what systems are at HR's disposal and how they can be used.

The IT department often needs help from human resources to figure out how to design better systems and when an upgrade is needed. And vendors need to know what HR needs, something that can be difficult when the two groups aren't speaking the same language.
