Worcester Credit Union has announced a partnership with Worcester Technical High School and Quinsigamond Community College that will allow high school students to receive college credits for internships at the financial institution.
The agreement stems from a deal that has been in place since WTHS opened in 2006 in which more than 100 students from the school’s finance and marketing program have had the chance to become employees at the credit union’s branch at the school.
“The students at our WTHS branch learn so much more than just how to cash a check,” said WCU President and CEO Karen E. Duffy. “They are trained to understand all aspects of retail banking, including deposit and loan account features, compliance, along with what is expected of an employee in a professional setting. Our branch at the technical school serves not only faculty, staff and students at the school, but also the general public. These students acquire a true taste of the business world.”
The year-long personal finance course that students at WTHS can complete includes a WCU internship. If students complete the course, meet criteria for acceptance and enroll at QCC, they will receive three college credits for FIN 111-Personal Financial Planning, an elective in business administration. Duffy said the new agreement is a way to recognize the training and experience students receive during their time at WCU, which has often led students to regular employment at financial institutions.
According to WTHS’s WCU branch manager Christine Miller, 14 students intern there each year.
