A study of Hologic’s Genius 3D Mammography system found it led to significant drops in the costly and stressful rescreening of patients.
The findings, published in JAMA Oncology, provide longitudinal evidence that fewer women were called back and that more cancer cases were found when they were called back. The study of 23,958 women at the University of Pennsylvania Hospital over a four-year period also found that there were long-term benefits when using 3D mammography in population-based screening.
Hologic is a Marlborough-based company that has been making 3D mammography scans available since 2011.
