In the last 20 years, Massachusetts defense contractors have tripled the value of their contracts to $15.6 billion and have doubled the sector's employment to 115,563, according to a study conducted by the Associated Industries of Massachusetts and the UMass Donohue Institute and funded by Waltham-based Raytheon.
The study found that defense contractors have increased their overall economic output by 146.2 percent in the last 20 years.
According to the study, Massachusetts ranks 5th nationally in U.S. Department of Defense contract awards and 7th in contracts from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. The sector's payroll is $8.93 billion, and it generates more than $3 billion in tax revenue for local, state and federal governments.
Eighty-five percent of all federal contracts with Massachusetts companies are for defense-related activities, the study claims.
