Sterling Manufacturing, an injection molding solutions provider, last week announced the launch of a new product development division that helps fill a need for better prototyping, according to the company.
The Lancaster company’s New Product Development division, which launched this year and will expand in 2017, provides product development services to its medical, consumer and defense partners, according to a press release. It was created to provide business partners with a more holistic prototyping service, said Randy Pell, a tooling expert and tool design and product development specialist who was appointed as Sterling’s first director of NPD a year ago.
"Many prototype companies are fast and relatively inexpensive, but they don't dive into your designs and ensure optimization," Pell said. "A full DFM (Design for Manufacturability) study is conducted on every part at Sterling. Our NPD team collaborates with partners throughout the process and encourages involvement as early in the product cycle as possible."
The NPD division has its own dedicated development space and new Engel injection molding equipment. It can offer customized solutions including single-cavity steel and aluminum tools, family tool systems, MUD systems, laser sintered tools, and ABS cores and cavities.
In the coming year, Sterling said it will focus on expanding NPD into high-demand industries where original equipment manufacturers usually require dimensionally accurate and fully functional parts to begin the approval process without investing in production tooling, such as medical and consumer.
