State Launches Venture Competition

The state of Massachusetts, together with private backers, is launching a contest for startup businesses designed to encourage entrepreneurial growth in the state.

The MassChallenge Venture Funds Competition will let new companies compete to win cash and services to help them grow. Winners will get $50,000 for the launch of their businesses. In return, they will be required to base operations in the state and create at least five jobs in their first year.

Contest participants will be divided into six tracks: health care and life sciences; IT, software and gaming; clean technology and energy; social development and nonprofit; open category, seed stage and open category, expansion stage.
