State and business officials stressed the importance of building bonds across borders as representatives of Canadian, French, Swiss and Haitian governments and companies gathered at the State House Tuesday.
"What is critical for Massachusetts is for it to be able to maintain its relationships with its international partners, including why we're all here today, the Francophonie partners that we have," Massachusetts Office of International Trade and Investment executive director Mark Sullivan said at an event celebrating Massachusetts ties with French-speaking countries.
Fifty-two Swiss companies have locations in Massachusetts, and Switzerland accounts for 6 percent of the 202,700 jobs created by all foreign affiliates in the Bay State, according to a flyer distributed at the event.
According to the Consulate General of Canada, 211,000 jobs in Massachusetts and nearly 9 million across America depend on trade and investment with Canada.
Nicholas Bossé of the Canada-based Brookfield Renewable Energy Group highlighted his company's 600-megawatt Bear Swamp storage facility, located along the Deerfield River. He said the facility can play an important role as Massachusetts looks to incorporate reliable clean energy into its power mix.
